Tanuku, June 2: Former Minister and YSRCP Regional Coordinator Karumuri Venkata Nageswara Rao has condemned Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s decision to cancel Mobile Dispensing Units (MDUs), labeling it a betrayal of public trust. Speaking in Tanuku, Karumuri criticized the scrapping of MDUs, which delivered rations directly to households, for causing widespread hardship, particularly for women, pregnant mothers, and tribal communities. “Chandrababu cannot tolerate initiatives that benefit people. Abolishing MDUs is a stab in the back,” he declared.
The return to an outdated ration system has led to malfunctioning servers and long queues in scorching heat, forcing women and families to struggle. In agency areas, pregnant women and new mothers face severe challenges accessing rations. Karumuri cited a tragic case in Anantapur, where 70-year-old Mandala Lakshmidevi died after collapsing in the heat while waiting for rations. “This is the harsh reality of Chandrababu’s policies, people are suffering, and lives are being lost,” he said.
Challenging Naidu’s claims of corruption in the MDU system, Karumuri demanded evidence of seized vehicles or recovered goods. “If corruption is the excuse, show proof. How many vehicles were seized? How many operators were charged? These are baseless allegations to justify harming the public,” he stated. He noted that the YSRCP government had operated both MDUs and ration shops, increasing dealer commissions and ensuring quality supplies like sortex rice, wheat flour, millets, red gram, and sugar.
The MDU cancellation has left nearly 20,000 workers from 9,260 units jobless, plunging their families into distress. Naidu dismantling a system emulated by states like Punjab out of political vendetta against YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s initiatives. He also warned of a conspiracy to phase out rice distribution via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes, citing illegal rice transport incidents in Visakhapatnam and Konaseema. “The coalition government exploits the public distribution system while staging dramas like ‘Seize the Ship.’ Show us one instance of auctioned recovered rice,” he challenged.
YSRCP has announced statewide protests on June 4, 2025, termed “Betrayal Day,” to protest the coalition government’s unfulfilled promises and authoritarian rule. Demonstrations will occur across Andhra Pradesh, with memoranda submitted to MROs, RDOs, and Collectors. “We demand the immediate reinstatement of MDUs and doorstep ration delivery. If the government fails to act, YSRCP will stand with the people,” Rao affirmed.
