YSRCP MP seeks urgent intervention of NHRC, CJI, and NCSC on police brutality

New Delhi, May 27: YSRCP MP from Tirupati, Maddila Gurumoorthy, has written a letter CJI, NHRC, and NCSC urging immediate intervention to address repeated incidents of police brutality in Andhra Pradesh. The letters were written to the CJI Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, V. Ramasubramanian, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC),, and Kishor Makwana, the Hon’ble Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. These incidents, targeting individuals from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Backward Class (BC) communities, reflect a grave violation of constitutional rights and human dignity.
In his letter, MP Gurumoorthy highlighted a shocking incident in Tenali, Guntur district, where three young individuals from underprivileged communities were subjected to violent and unlawful assault by uniformed police personnel in full public view, sparking widespread outrage. He also detailed the appalling case of Upputhala Harikrishna in Dachepalli, Palnadu district, who was falsely implicated in an attempted murder case, illegally detained, and subjected to severe custodial torture, leaving him unable to walk. These acts, supported by video evidence, violate Articles 14, 21, and 22 of the Constitution of India and the safeguards laid down in the Supreme Court’s judgments.
MP Gurumoorthy emphasized that these are not isolated cases but part of a systemic pattern of custodial violence and targeted harassment against marginalized communities in Andhra Pradesh. He has called for independent inquiries, accountability for the involved police officials, and measures to prevent such human rights violations in the future.
Additionally, U. Yellaiah, father of Upputhala Harikrishna, has also approached the NHRC, seeking justice for the custodial torture inflicted on his son.
