YSR Kanti Velugu: All You Need To Know About The Scheme

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government is launching a new health scheme, 'YSR Kanti Velugu', on the occasion of World Sight Day which is on October 10.

The scheme which is termed as a comprehensive, sustainable and universal eyecare scheme, will be formally launched by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in Anantapur at the Government Boys College Grounds at 11:30 AM on Thursday.

The YSR Kanti Velugu scheme endeavours to:

Provide comprehensive eye care and rectify vision defects among the State's over five crore population.

To ensure healthy eye sight for all citizens in the state which can be termed as a revolutionary scheme in the health care sector.

The government will bear the entire cost from preliminary eye check-up to surgeries wherever required for the entire 5.40 crore population.

The programme will be implemented in the next three years in six phases.

Seventy lakh schoolchildren will be covered scheme in the first two phases from October 10 to 16. Preliminary eye screening would be conducted on all students in government and private schools for a week.

Surgeries, if needed, will be performed in the second phase from November 1 to 31, all free of cost.

Children found to be having vision defects would be provided advanced treatment in the second phase from November 1.

The State government will implement the third to sixth phases of Kanti Velugu from February 1, 2020 to January 31, 2022 with a gap of six months between each phase.

From the third to sixth phases, one crore population will be covered in each phase, which includes primary mass eye screening, prescription and distribution of spectacles, secondary and tertiary care management like cataract surgeries, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy etc.

The cost of implementing the YSR Kanti Velugu is estimated at Rs 560.88 crore.

A task force headed by the Collector would monitor the programme in each district, where thousands of health and para-medical staff would take part in the programme.

They include 160 District Programme Officers, 1,415 medical officers, 42,360 ASHA workers, 62,500 teachers, 14,000 ANMs and 14,000 public health wing staff .

Health kits have already been sent to all the Primary Health Centres across the State.

The scheme is implemented under the aegis of the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare .
