Nellore (Pogathota): Farmers from Panjam village of Venkatagiri mandal expressed their agony by asking if the Government would provide irrigation water to their withering crops or if it would want them to commit suicide. Holding pesticide cans in their hands, they held a dharna in front of collectorate of Nellore district. They raised slogans against the Government.
The farmers spoke on this occasion to state that 55 families in their village were dependent on agriculture. Informing that they had given away their lands to the construction of Telugu Ganga project, they mentioned how small scale farmers among them had sown crops by taking loans. They stated that their cattle did not have water to drink as the groundwater in the village had dried.
Complaining that the Government officials were hindering them from utilising the available water by removing motors from the canal, they declared that they would have to commit suicides if their crops withered. They later submitted a memorandum to the Joint Collector of the district, A.Mohammed Imtiyaz.
