Bapatla, May 13: Former Minister and YSRCP Bapatla District President Merugu Nagarjuna condemned the coalition government’s apathy towards farmers, holding it accountable for the rising tide of farmer suicides in Andhra Pradesh. Visiting the grieving family of Upputoori Sambasiva Rao, a tobacco farmer from Veerannapalem in Parchur Mandal who recently took his own life, Nagarjuna, joined by Parchur Constituency YSRCP In-Charge Gade Madhusudan Reddy, demanded immediate compensation for the bereaved family and robust government intervention to support farmers facing financial ruin.
“The coalition government’s negligent policies have pushed farmers to the brink,” Nagarjuna asserted. “For eleven months, we have seen nothing but indifference from a government that has failed to ensure remunerative prices for tobacco, chickpeas, chilies, and maize. Farmers are drowning in debt, unable to secure even minimum support prices, and the government looks the other way. It’s a betrayal of our farmers.” He squarely blamed Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s administration for its failure to address agricultural distress, treating farmers’ struggles with disdain.
Nagarjuna highlighted the tragic case of Upputoori Sambasiva Rao, whose suicide was a dire consequence of the government’s inaction. “This farmer’s death is on the government’s hands,” he said. “They must immediately provide compensation to his family and take concrete steps to prevent further tragedies.” He called for urgent policy reforms, including guaranteed minimum support prices and debt relief measures, to protect farmers from economic despair.
“Farmers are the backbone of Andhra Pradesh, yet they are being crushed by this government’s failures,” he said. “We demand accountability, action, justice, and extend to every farmer struggling to survive.”
Standing firmly with the agricultural community, “We will not rest until the government fulfills its duty to our farmers,” he declared.
