The Government’s Negligence To Drought

  • People’s
    problem of drinking water
  • Delay in
    announcing drought areas too
  • Lack of funds
    for rural water supply
  • Leader of
opposition YS Jagan questions the Government

Hyderabad: YSRCP president and leader of opposition YS Jagan criticized the negligent
behaviour of the Government towards fighting drought. He presented the details
of this with numbers. During the question hour, MLAs including Srikanth Reddy,
Visweswar Reddy and Chand Basha raised questions regarding drought. As the
Government’s response to them was unclear, YS intervened.

He complained that the Government was
creating a false impression that ground water level increased while drought
increased in the state in reality. Moreover the Government was taking credit
for it, exclaimed YS Jagan. He said that the level might have risen in some
places due to cyclones. YS Jagan mentioned that people had to walk for kilometers
to get water. This was being projected by all newspapers along with pictures.
This was happening in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari
too. This was mentioned in yellow media paper Eenadu too, declared YS Jagan.

He stated that usually drought areas were
announced around 4th and 5th of October. But 27 mandals
had been announced on 27th of October and on the second go, 163 had
been announced on 21st of November. In fact, there had been floods
on 17th, 18th and 19th of November, which was
before the announcement. If something that had to be announced at the beginning
of October was announced at the end of November, why would the centre come for
help, YS questioned. He added that it was why Rs.433 crore and Rs.280 crore had
been sanctioned in two shifts when Rs.2,343 crore was asked for. Over all, only
one-third of the requested amount had been sanctioned due to the Government’s
delay.

YS Jagan remarked that when the drought was
in its worst state, water was not being provided on time. Fermers had not received
input subsidy for 2015-16. Rural Water Supply Scheme allocations also were not
happening properly. YS Jagan mentioned that YSR district received very little
amount. He specified that the staff working on water supply work had not
received salaries for 8 months. Mentioning that many more districts faced the
same scenario, YS Jagan announced that he, along with other members of YSRCP,
was walking out. He was then followed by them.
