Demanding that the Government should pay more towards the mess charges of students living in Government Welfare Hostels, YSRCP Youth Wing activists and students laid a siege to the residence of the Social Welfare Minister Pitani Satyanarayana in Hyderabad on Monday.

Demonstrating under the leadership of the YSRCP State Youth Wing president Putha Pratap Reddy, the activists raised slogans holding plates and glasses. They wanted the Government to improve the living conditions in all welfare hostels across the state.

When there are no indications of the Minister coming out of the house, the demonstrators hurled the plates and glasses into the house forcing the police to lathcharge and arrest them. The police took them to the Abids police station and released them on personal sureties.

Later, Pratap Reddy told media persons that the Government should pay more towards the mess charges as the rates have gone up multifold and students are unable to bear the costs. “Whatever the Government is paying towards the mess charges is peanuts and won’t be of any use,” he said.

Lambasting the Government for not raising the mess charges in the last four years, Pratap Reddy said the Government has been paying Rs.17 each per day towards the mess charges and majority of the 10 lakh students living in the hostels are going hungry.
