Fast aimed at creating awareness: Vijayamma

Hyderabad, April 2, 2013: YSRCP honourary president Smt. Y.S. Vijayamma began an indefinite fast here today along with party MLAs and MLCs saying they have decided to begin the fast as the Government seemed to be in no mood to reduce the hefty power tariff imposed on the people.

Addressing the party leaders and activists before commencing the fast at the new MLA quarters, she asserted that all agitations being undertaken by the YSR Congress Party are aimed at creating awareness among the people against the anti-people policies of the Congress Government and the support being extended to it by the TDP.

She said the state has been facing unprecedented power crisis after the formation of the state because of the Government’s lack of vision. “The Government has imposed additional financial burden on the people by increasing all taxes such as RTC charges, municipal taxes, water tax and even registration charges. The people are being forced to bear an additional burden of Rs. 32 000 Cr only through hike in power charges,” she said adding that they have launched the indefinite fast as the Government was adamant on the power tariff hike.

YSRCP had taken up several agitations against the Government’s anti-people’s decisions in the past, she said, adding that party president Sri Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had also undertaken several Deekshas to highlight people’s issues. “Sitting even in jail, he has been thinking of people’s welfare,” she said.

Targets Chandrababu Naidu

Smt. Vijayamma particularly targeted TDP president Chandrababu Naidu in her speech saying he had hiked the power tariff 8 times during his regime while the present Congress regime had increased the charges four times in the last four years.

She said the APSEB’s fortunes nosedived during the Naidu’s regime as its pre-1994 surplus revenues had transformed into Rs. 22, 000 Cr losses after Naidu became CM even as 4000 farmers had committed suicide between 1995 and 2004 unable to bear the burden.

While the worth of Government properties had come down drastically during the Naidu regime, it went up multifold during the YSR regime, she said, questioning the right of Naidu in making tall claims about his administration during his Padayatra. “Instead of opposing the anti-people policies of the Government, he has been continuously supporting the Congress party and its Government.”

All our past and present agitations, including Smt. Y. S. Sharmila’s Padayatra, are only aimed at creating awareness among the people, she said.
