YSRCP Votes Against Triple Talaq Bill

New Delhi: YSRCP expressed its opposition to the triple talaq bill tabled by the Centre in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Party MP Vijayasai Reddy wondered how criminal punishment is awarded for something that comes under civil contract, and alleged that the proposed Bill is discriminatory towards Muslim men.

The contentious Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was cleared in Rajya Sabha after a lengthy debate with 99 to 84 votes. Once the triple talaq bill gets the assent of the President Ramnath Kovind and notified by the government, it will replace the triple talaq ordinance promulgated last in February.

Along with Congress, TMC, DMK, RJD, CPI (M) voted against the Bill, while JD (U) and AIADMK walked out of the House. TRS abstained from voting.
