On Weavers' Day, looms stare at doom

Life for the weavers community today is a saga of unending misery and untold trials and tribulations. Despite toiling the whole day, they are unable to get even a morsel of food. The weavers are staring at an unprecedented crisis. Where the healthy sound of looms should have been heard, the sad and tragic din of death is is being heard today. Chandrababu has completely ignored the handloom sector.
During the YSR regime, this was never the case. He took every care to ensure that the weavers had smile on their face. Their loans were waived and the allocations were hiked. He breathed life into the industry by unveiling special schemes.
But now, the hapless weavers find no hope and are resorting to suicides. The town of Dharmavaram, known as the silk and handloom hub of the state, too is reeling under the impact of the unheard-of crisis. Rise in the prices of the raw material and the lack of support from the Government are hitting at the root of the handloom sector in the state. The YSR’s handloom weaver life insurance scheme has been watered down the moment the TDP came to power. The weavers now see hope only in YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who they feel is the only leader who can solve their problems.
