Polavaram Project Stuck With Stench Of Corruption

The Andhra Pradesh government had failed in achieving the targets set for the completion of the much hyped Polavaram project taken up on river Godavari. On the other hand misappropriation of funds was also noticed in the execution of the works. As a result, the union government is unlikely release the funds to the state for the project in the future.

The central committee headed by Central Water Commission ( CWC) member Masood Ahmed, who recently visited AP,  had submitted a report to the centre.  The committee had come to a conclusion that the project will not complete before the deadline  -March 2018  set by the AP government.  Taking serious note of it, the committee is  visiting the state to study the progress in the works on August 18 and seek the explanation from the government.

The union government had released more than Rs 3000 crore funds exclusively for Polavaram. There were strong allegations that the funds have been misused and delay was  taken place in collusion with contractors . Centre also found anomalies in the project designs and suggested some changes recently.

Officials said if the government did not complete the project before the deadline, all the funds given by centre will be converted into loan and the AP government will have to clear them. The Centre already lost faith in AP government as the latter did not fulfill the benchmark set for the completion of Polavaram.
