It's Been One Year Since Fight At Delhi

  • YS Jagan fights in New Delhi for special status
  • YSRCP continues to struggle on behalf of people
  • People's leader meets national leaders in New Delhi

New Delhi: On the 10th of August in 2015, the leader of opposition of AP and YSRCP president YS Jagan protested in New Delhi in demand for the sanction of special category status to the state. He took to the notice of all the national leaders, the wish of the people of the state through his protest. Along with thousands of people who went there from AP. he staged a huge agitation in a democratic fashion.

Background to the movement

At the time of bifurcation of AP, both the Government and the principal opposition party of the time promised to sanction special category status. It was repeatedly promised that the status would be given for 10-15 years. But after coming to power, Chandrababu's heart was filled with the idea of special packages. He started to settle down for the deal, so that he could swallow more. With such an indifference from the CM himself, the centre also took it easy. But YSRCP, as a responsible opposition party, resorted to start a movement for the attainment of special category status. Soon after elections' results were out, YSRCP resident YS Jagan went to New Delhi to meet the leaders there and submit a memorandum for the sanction of special status. After that, the party had been reminding the Government about the need for the status and staging agitations from time to time in demand for it. Due to lack of proper response from the central and the state Governments and due to the deliberate negligence of TDP Government in trying to achieve the status, YSRCP strengthened its fight.

This is what happened on that day

YS Jagan decided to hold a dharna at Delhi on the 10th of August last year. As per the call, the party's leaders, followers and activists throughout the state set out to Delhi in special trains. Streets of Delhi were filled with people gathered in thousands. Raising the slogan "Special status is the right of people of AP", At the same time, the news about Munikoti, a youth, who had sacrificed his life at Tirupati for the cause, had reached them. They paid tribute to him, decorated the statue of Dr.YS Rajasekhar Reddy with flower garlands and began their dharna. YS Jagan held deeksha at Jantar Mantar throughout the day. National leaders extended their solidarity to the deeksha. YS Jagan then held a march past with party leaders at the parliament. The police hindered the event and arrested YS Jagan along with other leaders.

Consolidation of the movement

Even 2.5 years after the bifurcation of the state, Chandrababu is unable to give his stand on the special category status. Unlike leader of opposition of the state, YS Jagan, he is not strongly expressing his demand whenever he goes to Delhi. YSRCP has also held bandh and agitations throughout the state, thus having the voice of the people heard. He has stayed in Delhi since two days. He met President of India, Pranab Mukherji, and submitted a memorandum. Followed by YSRCP MPs, he also met national party leaders and sought their solidarity for the cause.
