YS Jagan Demands Rs 20 Lakh Ex-gratia: Train Mishap

Kuneru (Vizianagaram dist), Jan 23: Leader of Opposition YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakhs to the kin of the deceased in the Hirakhand Express mishap and said that the Centre and State governments should make public the action taken report.

‘The ex-gratia and compensation they are paying is meager and does not supplement the human loss nor drive in a sense of responsibility into the department and we demand that Rs 20 lakh should be paid for the family that has lost a member in the mishap,’ he told reporters here on Monday after visiting the hospital where the injured were admitted for treatment.

Of the injured seven are from our state and are poor labourers and the compensation of Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 would not be sufficient as they would be bedridden for some more days. Keeping this in view the government should announce Rs 2 lakh for the injured.

The inquiry should be thorough and the report should be made public and should not be done as a formality as this is the third mishap in three months and the safety measures that were put in place should also be made public along with the report, he said. People should feel no fear for travelling in the train if the compensation is more, he said.
