Coop polls not a yardstick for popularity

Hyderabad, February 5, 2013: Describing as a sham the Congress patting its own back on
the success of cooperative polls, YSR Congress has said that the polls were
heavily rigged and need not be considered as a yardstick for popularity.

“Nearly 70 percent of voters are defaulters and the State misused
official machinery, money power and muscle power to show pretense of popularity
though the reality is otherwise,” party spokesperson Bajireddy Govardhan told
reporters here on Tuesday.

The heavy rigging includes, large scale enrollment of bogus voters and
allowing defaulters to vote apart from bringing stay in places where Congress
felt it was weak or losing badly, he said adding that the results are not a
yardstick for people’s mandate and challenged Congress to face direct
elections, either for local bodies or the assembly to know its actual strength.

When YSR was Chief Minister, the elections to cooperative societies and
local bodies were held in the true spirit unlike the State government which has
scant respect for farmers and hardly contributed for their welfare and has been
trying to eke out political mileage from these polls.

The State government that failed to keep its promise of increasing the
input subsidy to Rs 10,000 and the faulty policies that has forced farmers of
the fertile Konaseema region to announce a crop holiday, cannot get farmers’
support, he said.

“YSRC has kept away from the polls as there is a plethora of
irregularities right from the day the elections schedule of cooperative
elections was announced,” he said adding that sympathisers of YSRCP have
participated in the elections and won in many places.

Having a dig at the nexus of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and
Leader of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu, he said the cooperation between the
two has been in the open with the TDP leader developing cold feet to move a no
trust motion.  Cooperative sector received a raw deal during N Chandrababu
Naidu’s term and Kiran Kumar Reddy is emulating him.

While Chandrababu had developed his Heritage Company at the cost of
Chittoor Dairy, Krian Kumar Reddy has been pushing Andhra Pradesh Dairy into
the red to benefit N Chandrababu Naidu.

The actual strength of the two parties will be known in direct elections
and they are bound to bite the dust, he said.
