Vijayawada: The YSR Congress Party has demanded that the Government own up responsibility for the boat tragedy in Krishna river. YSRCP leaders - Ongole MP YS Subba Reddy, MLC Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, MLA Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, former MLAs Parthasarathi and Jogi Ramesh inspected the mishap site in Vijayawada on Monday and interacted with the kin of the victims and those undergoing treatment in the hospitals.
Later, speaking to mediapersons, YS Subba Reddy said that the tragedy could have been averted if only the passengers were given life jackets. As many as 38 passengers were allowed onto the boat and not one of them had life jacket, he pointed out. "The boat did not have valid licence. When I rushed to the spot last night as the victims were from my constituency, I found no official at the spot. The bodies were hurriedly shifted to Ongole in the night itself," Reddy said.
He said Chandrababu Naidu should own up responsibility for the mishap. Reminding that over 30 persons died in a stampede on the inaugural day of the Godavari pushkarams, he said the Government was very callous about the lives of the pilgrims and the common man.
