Spurious Seed menace has come as a bolt from the blue for the distressed farmers in Andhra Pradesh. The farming community plunged into deep crisis with the unabated supply of spurious seeds by the seed companies. As a result, farmers incurred huge loss. Some of them also committed suicide unable to cope with the mounting financial burden.
The affected farming community has been fighting for compensation in the courts and also fighting against against Chandrababu Naidu’s government. But, the farmers did not get any solace. Instead, the government foisted cases against farmers and harassing them.
The peasants also met State ministers Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy and Devineni Uma Maheshwara Rao and explained their woes in the Assembly. None of them come forward to rescue them.
The farming community also conducted Chalo Assembly and staged dharnas. Government used police force and foiled their agitations. They were also forced to visit police stations and courts for registering cases against them. They have been demanding to pay compensation as per the recommendation made by an enquiry agency into spurious Seed supplying companies.
In a fresh case, three farmers consumed poison and tried to commit suicide at a police station. One of the victims has been facing 13 cases. In some cases, farmers were forced to submit letters in written that they will not stage dharna in future. Police warned 41 farmers in Penugolanu village. Already, 56 farmers were visiting Tiruvuru court on the pending cases.
